Founded on the banks of the Arkansas River and incorporated in 1898, Tulsa exploded from a Creek Nation trading post into the self-proclaimed "Oil Capital of the World" by the 1920s. The oil money left behind one of the finest collections of art deco architecture in America — terracotta, brass, and zigzag stone lining every downtown block.
Just north of the tracks, the Greenwood District — Black Wall Street — became the most prosperous Black community in the country before the 1921 Race Massacre. Today its restored corridor, memorials, and thriving new generation of Black-owned businesses are essential to any downtown visit.
A century later, downtown is in the middle of a full renaissance: the Arts District, Deco District, East Village and Greenwood are packed with restaurants, breweries, live venues, and rooftops — all walkable, all pouring.
